Blast Furnace

                      Blast Furnace

Take Note:
1.      Slag is selled out to cut down the cost of the process.
2.      Molten iron at the bottom of the don’t react or oxidise with incoming oxygen because it is covered with a thin layer of molten slag.
3.      In the blast furnace hydrogen gas produces from the reaction between red hot carbon and steam.
             H2O + C             H2 + CO
4.      Carbon monoxide further burns with oxygen to release heat energy which is then used to heat the air before injecting in the blast furnace. This reduces the fuel cost for heating the air upto 1600o C
5.      At the bottom of the furnace some of the hematite ore reduces into iron with carbon or coke.
                         Fe2O3 + C           2Fe + 3CO

Test for Carbonmonoxide
Carbonmonoxide burns with a blue flame
